Data

Biological data

AmphibiaWeb
AmphibiaWeb contains 6060 species, for there are approximately 1270 species accounts, 1173 distribution maps, 3473 literature references, 147 sound files, and 7827 photos of 1760 different amphibian species.

Atlas Florae Europaeae
Atlas Florae Europaeae (AFE) is a project for mapping the distribution of vascular plants in Europe. The project was launched already in 1965 as a collaborative effort of European botanists and since then the secretariat has functioned at the Botanical Museum of the Finnish Museum of Natural History, Helsinki.

Biogeography Informatics Laboratory
Includes biological environmental data and meta data for various regions and resolutions. A useful data platform for biogeographers, hosted by the National Museum of Natural Sciences (Madrid).

Digital Distribution Maps of the Birds of the Western Hemisphere
A digital map library of the distributions of the birds of the Western Hemisphere, covering 4,247 species. The maps are annotated to indicate sources, migratory status, historic versus current ranges, origin (native or introduced) and taxonomic decisions. The migratory status indications are particularly detailed, distinguishing where birds are permanent residents, breeding residents, non-breeding residents, or passage migrants.

GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility)
The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international organisation that is working to make the world’s biodiversity data accessible anywhere in the world. GBIF’s members include countries and international organisations who have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that they will share biodiversity data and contribute to the development of increasingly effective mechanisms for making those data available via the Internet.

Global Resource Information Database (UNEP/DEWA/GRID-Europe)
DEWA/GRID-Europe is one of UNEP’s major centres for data and information management, with a unique, “value-adding” mandate in the handling of global and regional environmental data, which in turn support the environment assessment and early warning activities of UNEP and its partners.

ReefBase
ReefBase is the world’s premier online information system on coral reefs, and provides information services to coral reef professionals involved in management, research, monitoring, conservation and education.

Environmental data

Biogeography Informatics Laboratory
Includes biological environmental data and meta data for various regions and resolutions. A useful data platform for biogeographers, hosted by the National Museum of Natural Sciences (Madrid).

DIVA Climate
High resolution simulations of global climate for the present and the future formated for use with DIVA GIS.

IPCC
The Data Distribution Centre of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This is the main source of information for data on climate change.

Natural Geophysical Data Center (NGDC)
NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) provides scientific stewardship, products, and services for geophysical data from the Sun to the Earth and Earth’s sea floor and solid earth environment, including Earth observations from space, information on natural hazards or on the distribution of ecosystems.

Oceanportal
A comprehensive directory of links to all kinds of resources in oceanographic data.

World Database on Protected Areas
The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) provides the most comprehensive dataset on protected areas worldwide and is managed by UNEP-WCMC in partnership with the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the World Database on Protected Areas Consortium. The WDPA is a fully relational database containing information on the status, environment and management of individual protected areas.
